EXCLUSIVE: Dinesh Vijan opens up about Roohi, Stree 2, Munjha, Bhediya and his horror universe

On Monday, Dinesh Vijan hosted a trailer preview of his upcoming horror comedy, Roohi, fronted by Janhvi Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao, and the producer seemed confident and content with the way his next, directed by Hardik Mehta, has shaped up. The film is set to be the first major motion picture to release on the big screen in Hindi on March 11, and the trade is optimistic that the horror comedy will bring back the audience to the cinema halls. Post the trailer preview, Pinkvilla had an exclusive chat with Dinesh Vijan, and the filmmaker opened up about his ambitious horror universe plans.

Though in the same world of horror comedy, as visible in the promo, the makers have tried to give a distinct identity to Roohi. When asked, about the idea of spinning a universe out of these stories, Dinesh answers, “The universe will conspire to bring all the stories together. The writing on Roohi started much before Stree released, and if you ask me, Roohi is Stree’s crazier sister. That’s the only similarity, but it’s a very nuanced film. The pressure of universe is not on Roohi as the idea is that each film has to work on its own and then taken forward. All my horror comedies will start connecting to each other at a latter stage and we will do larger things in it. We are right now taking baby steps.”

He goes ahead to inform that Stree and Roohi will be followed by two more films, Munjha and Bhediya in the horror space. “So, we are doing a film called Mujha, which is the prequel to Stree and tells us about the girl that came in Stree. It goes on the floors in September, and post that, sometime next year, the Stree sequel will happen,” Dinesh explains, and further adds, “First, we will tell you who was the girl who came in Stree and what other complications she got along. Then the films will start interacting with each other.”

Dinesh promises that all the films from the universe will have their independent world that would co-exist in the universe of horror. “They will of course meet each other because they fall in the horror comedy space. We are starting a film called Bhediya next week, and that’s a monster comedy. So even that will find a way into the universe, but first, they all need to make their presence felt individually before becoming a part of something larger,” he signs off.

Dinesh alongwith his Studio Partner, Jio Studios are planning to bring the film on the big screen in 1500 screens across India on March 11.
