Adipurush box office report: A still from the film

Adipurush's slide southwards continued on Thursday with the film ending its first week in theatres at Rs 123 crore net, reports Box Office India. Day 7's earnings of about Rs 2.5 crore net is nearly 90% down from Day 1 which fetched Rs 35 crore net in ticket sales. It should be noted that ticket prices were reduced on Wednesday and Thursday. Adipurush was released last Friday in Hindi and Telugu; the film has done respectable business in Hyderabad, according to Box Office India.

Adipurush started strong with massive advance bookings and a first weekend that fetched over Rs 100 crore net. All told, the film's first collection is the second-highest of the year although that may be a reflection on the relatively lean box office pickings of 2023 so far. Also to be considered is Adipurush's budget, reportedly Rs 400 crore.

Adipurush, directed by Om Raut, is a VFX-heavy retelling of some events in the Ramayana. The cast includes Prabhas as Raghav, Kriti Sanon as Janaki, Saif Ali Khan as Lankesh, Sunny Singh as Shesh, and Devdatta Nage as Bajrang. The film has been savaged by both critics and audiences alike for its break with tradition in depicting a revered epic and for its street style dialogues.

Wide-spread condemnation of the dialogues prompted Adipurush makers to announce they would revise some of the lines. This week, new prints of the film will carry a redone version of a dialogue that caused particular offence – the "kapda tere baap ka" line spoken by Bajrang in the scene in which he sets Lanka on fire. The word "baap" has been replaced with "Lanka."
